Canadians detained at border for 7 hours

A group of young black Canadians on their way to see Barack Obama sworn into office say they were detained for seven hours at the U.S. border on Monday because of religious and racial stereotyping as their passports were checked and rechecked.

They eventually made it to Washington yesterday to see the inauguration of the 44th president.
Tyrone Edwards, organizer of the three-bus trip to Washington for black youth involved in the Toronto-based Remix Project, a cultural non-profit group, said 168 people from local non-profit groups made the 800-kilometre trek.

The buses left Toronto on Monday morning but were stopped at the Peace Bridge just outside Buffalo at around 1 p.m.

Speaking to the Star by phone, Edwards, the 27-year-old head of Remix, said the first bus cleared customs, as did the second bus, where he was seated. But the third bus was boarded by U.S. customs officers who asked about 14 young girls, all wearing hijabs, for their passports. Because Edwards was the organizer of the trip, he kept the second bus waiting until the third cleared customs. Initially he thought it would just be a short delay.

But after the girls’ passports were taken, customs officers boarded the second bus again and asked for Edwards’ passport as well as the passport of colleague and seatmate Adel Prince Nur.
The customs agents also asked for the passports of two sisters on the second bus. Their last name was Mohammed, Edwards said.

All of them – who all held Canadian passports – were then fingerprinted, photographed and questioned by U.S. customs officers.

“There was no legitimate reason to hold us up. They wasted a lot of time.”

Edwards was born in Canada, but all the others were either born in Somalia or Saudi Arabia, he said. And their Canadian passports listed their place of birth. That’s why he thinks the buses were detained.
At one point, he said, a U.S. officer showed two girls on the bus some pictures and asked them if they recognized three Somali men. They told the officer they weren’t from Somalia, but Trinidad, Edwards said.

He believes the only reason the two girls were questioned was because they were wearing hijabs.

During the seven hours they were detained their luggage was also X-rayed and their personal hand luggage was searched, Edwards said.

A Federal Bureau of Investigation officer was also called in to question them. “I have his card in my back pocket,” said Edwards, who was angry about being stopped.

The border officers asked a lot of questions about who organized the trip and why they were going to Washington.

“I really commend the young ladies who were humiliated and treated so unfairly and it was blatantly obvious they were being singled out,” Edwards said.

Nur, who works as a DJ known as Future with the Remix Project, was also questioned about his reasons for going to Washington. He, too, had a Canadian passport but was born in Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. border guard said he simply didn’t understand why Canadian youth would want to go to Obama’s inauguration.

“I told him this is a big moment in history,” said Nur. “I told him as a young black man I find a lot of inspiration from Barack Obama’s story.”

U.S. Customs at the Peace Bridge referred all questions on the incident to its media spokesperson, but no one was available to take the call.

Nur, Edwards and the others on the trip were determined, however, not to let the seven-hour delay ruin what was a momentous moment in history.

“We tried to frame it this way – any type of significant historical moment in black history has always come out of a struggle,” said Edwards. “This is why it’s so important for everyone (on the bus) to get to the inauguration. That’s why we’re going from Toronto to Washington to stand out in the cold and listen to a man speak – because that man symbolizes so many things such as hope and change.”

Edwards hopes incidents like the one they experienced at the Peace Bridge will become less and less frequent now that Obama is president.

...to beat up an old person????

Before you think that I have anger issues... hear me out.

There are maybe some contributing factors to my lack of patience this morning (its -26 degrees Celsius, I lost one of my mittens on the way to the subway, I dropped my transfer and the wind took it on the tracks so I could not retrieve the damn thing, I waited for the subway for 20 minutes in the -26 weather... and the list goes on). OK OK... pretty bad start... BUT when the subway got there I decided its Friday- I'm going away this weekend- and I am going to have a good day!

So...

I get on to the subway, and its packed- and I understand cause its Friday morning at 9am...its always packed- doesn't even phase me.
1 stop, 2 stops go by, and then all of sudden this old couple get on and stand right beside me and just start complaining about everything!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what I hear right from the get go- (mind you this is BOTH of them talking and agreeing on the same stupid shit- so its double the annoyance)

-"I cannot believe these young people, they take up the whole sidewalk!!- No one teaches them manners anymore"
-"Parents these days, a lot of them shouldn't even have children! They don't handle the responsibility of children"
-"Did you just see that guy come on the subway like he owned it! So rude, he has his earphones on so he can't hear anything and he just nudged me" (OMG at this point I was gonna say: LADY its 9am on the goddamn subway heading downtown- WTF do you expect?????!!!)
-"My friend died ... she was 95, and you know what she said to me before she died...she said that she could not wait for it to end for her cause she was so sick of this world...and I totally agree with her- I've never travelled much, but the world seems like its falling apart.
-"A lady on the escalator was behind me and she was like excuse me I am in a rush, can I pass you, and I was like No sweetie, this is an escalator..if you are in a rush you should have took the stairs" (.....at this point, my fists were clenched and all that was holding me back was the thought of my grandma...cause she probably pisses a lot of ppl off, but I would never hit her...lol)

AND THIS IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE....

-"I was talking to my doctor the other day...and I was complaining to him how asian people are always getting in my way on the sidewalk (this couple can clearly see ME standing beside them), and I always wanted to give them a lesson on how we all walk on the right side of the sidewalk so oncoming traffic has clear pathway cause they are staying to their right side. The asians just don't seem to understand this concept... "

Now, if my parents never taught me manners, I would have decked them both right there. Why is it that I am always getting up from my seat for elders, Why is it that I help with their bags up the escalator????
I don't think that this grumpy old couple ever had manners or respect taught to them-and to be complaining about this world...and not have travelled much?????!!! This couple is complaining from CANADA?????? Where we have no huge poverty, we have clean water to drink, we are not prone to natural disasters, and the list goes on.......

I cannot help but laugh at the events this morning... just thought I would share...

During the Holiday season I am constantly reminded of how lucky I am...how lucky a lot of us are. The simple things like water, a bed to sleep in, coffee in the morning... etc..simple things. Water is so important-clean water, drinkable water. My uncle who is heavily involved in chartiy work for CASS (Canadian Aid for Suthern Sudan) has made me realize even more how many people in the world are without drinkable water; Not only this, but also having no knowledge of how to make the resources around them safe for consumption. I hope to get more involved with this charity over the next couple months and hope to raise awareness about this issue with the individuals my age. I have pasted some background history CASS as well as "The Water Sch2ool" (that wasn't a typo either lol). I hope you all look into this cause and I urge you to spread the word.

HISTORY OF SUDAN
The modern history of Sudan has been marked by bloodshed and political instability. In 1874, the Egyptians completed a 50-year campaign to bring the nomads of the area under their control. In 1881, Muhammad Ahmad, known as the Mahdi, led a successful Muslim separatist uprising. His forces trapped legendary British general Charles Gordon in the capital, Khartoum, in 1884. Commanders of a British relief force appealed to Canada for boatmen to help transport their army up the Nile, and 386 Canadian volunteers took part in Canada's first overseas military action. But that expedition was unsuccessful — two days before its arrival at Khartoum, Gordon was killed when the Sudanese captured the city.

The Mahdi was finally overthrown in 1899 by another Anglo-Egyptian army. Britain, in partnership with Egypt, then ruled Sudan for the first half of the 20th century. In 1956 the independent Republic of the Sudan was proclaimed. Since then, Sudan has been buffeted by unrest. Attempts by the country's Muslim majority to subjugate the non-Muslim population of the south have resulted in civil conflict — from 1963 to 1971, and from the mid-1980s to the present.

The number one challenge presently facing Sudan is finding a sustainable peace. Yet leaders from both sides of the conflict state that the key requirement for a prosperous future in Sudan is education for its children. It is for this reason that Canadian Aid for Southern Sudan has been asked to assist in the building of schools in the south of Sudan. Now with peace signed between north and south Sudan the opportunities have never been better - or more challenging.

Radio is a very sketchy industry. One could be a well respected Program Director for a station and be laid off for lack of performance the next month. You're talking to a DJ who had shows on CHRY 105.5 FM, FLOW 93.5 FM, and KISS 92.5 FM. Also a DJ who was ready to host and DJ a Summer Jam for a radio station that featured Jay-Z & 50 Cent, and actually being laid off a week before the concert due to format change of radio station. One minute, you heard "50 Cent - In Da Club", and the next song was "Pet Shop Boys - Go West". Stations are always fighting for their shares in the market, and it all comes down to their report card at the end of every season. If it bombs enough, they will switch or changes will be made. I've been with XM close to 5 years now. The City XM 67 was great for me. I got emails from small town listeners like from Idaho, Dakota, Virginia etc...Places I would probably never visit. So it covered a lot of places for me. Since the merge with XM & Sirius Satellite Radio, both stations had to cancel over 50 channels from both sides that were similar to each other including my channel, THE CITY XM 67. I had fun making mixes for you, but this will be the final one for THE CITY XM 67. The good news is, the quest for DJ Baby Yu & radio will never end. I love radio, and that guarantee new things will arise soon. The new XM Sirius Satellite Radio hasn't heard the last of me yet. More to come, stay tuned!

I recently watched "Burn after Reading" directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, and it was one of the most well written movies I have watched in a long time. And Brad's performance was outstanding!!! MUST see.
Anyways ....his new one: The Curious Life of Benjamin Button looks incredible.

Ok, so admittedly it has been awhile since I have been completely captivated and dedicated to reading a complete series.

If you haven't heard of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series... you must be living under a rock. Well I have been living under a rock until last week when my casual stop in at Idigo (to usual pick up the latest issues of my fav. magazines) turned into the discovery of my latest obsession....yes I said it ...its now officially an "obsession".

So titled "Twilight", I picked it up and brought it to the cashier, and our conversation went like this:

Cashier: (as I handed my random magazines and copy of Twilight on the table) "You might as well buy the Twilight series cause I guarentee that you will be back for the rest"

Me: "Oh really?... well I have heard about this book a couple times here and there on facebook...and I don't really have all that much time to read... so I will just get the first one for now"

Cashier: "Alight, well I am sure that I will see you very soon..."

Me: "Ok we'll see"

DAMN INDIGO EMPLOYEE WAS RIGHT. I finished Twilight in what...3 days????? I couldnt put it down. In the subway... eating, before bed, before I get out of bed, in the car, ...you get the idea.

All I can say is that I went back to Indigo today... and as this twisted universe might have it... same cashier was working... conversation went like this:

Cashier: "HAHAHAHA back so early?"

Me: "Ya ya ya, I can't help it, its sooooooo goood"

Cashier: "Ya, my girlfriend is reading the series right now, and that Edward Cullen dude is all she talks about".

Me: "Wellllll he is the most dreamy vampire in the whole entire universe!!!"

Cashier: (laughs VERY out loud) "Funny enough, not the first time I have heard that come out of someones mouth"

So ya... Twilight will be made into a movie coming out in November... but I mean... usually the book is better so I am battling myself whether to see it or not. But If you read this book, and you do not have a huge crush on Edward, SOMETHING is wrong with you!!!!! I am on the second book in the series now; "New Moon" and I am already 1/3 done. *sigh*

Super easy reading...but SUPER entertaining.

Last night I had the opportunity to see DJ JAZZY JEFF live at Republik in Toronto.

So let me me just start off by saying that the show was amazing! The dude is so talented...I was basically in awe the whole time. It was a Sunday night, but nothing stopped Mahsa from bringing out the jaggerbombs by the tray fulls!....yes thats right: TRAY FULLS.

Jazzy Jeff hands down is a DJ legend, and I am honored that I had the chance to see him again ripping it on the 1's and 2's.

My homey Will (http://www.lostinthewillderness.com/) always had a cool swag about him and I knew he was a dooooope photographer....but ALSO he knows how to throw one dope ass party. With help from one of Toronto's best DJ Wristpect, PPLUS and Sir Lance, the party dubbed "October's Very Own" was one of the best jams I've been to in a long time. Good vibes, good people, great music, and the perfect location. Foundation was in the building for this event dressed fresh and fly as always, and of course I had to rock my newly purchased ideall toque(http://www.thelegendsleague.com/) which I LOOOOOOVE! Anyways that is my rant on how great this party was, if you attended this event, you know what I'm sayin.

Its been a minute. But I'm back on here to blog about ...well... whatever I want.
So let me first say that the last couple months has been crazy for me...switching jobs, making new friends, losing friends, and oh... GETTING MARRIED.
